Zoysiagrass generally establishes slowly, 1 to 2 years for coverage from sprigs and plugs in temperate areas. Weed control is essential to ensure establishment. This can be both managerial (clean sead bed, mowing, and hand-pulling) and chemical (both pre- and postemergence herbicides). Once established, the presence of deep rhizomes makes zoysiagrass difficult to eradicate, and sometimes deep excavation is required.
In subtropical areas, zoysiagrass can be encouraged to cover the ground quickly by using liberal amounts of nitrogen, but this approach is risky. The temporary benefit of enhanced growth from over-fertilization is often associated with problems from susceptibility to diseases.
In Florida, zoysiagrasses have been used successfully in few areas. These are generally coastal areas with marl or rocky soils, not in deep sands.
